Thirty years ago, July 2 on Wundagore Mountain, Jonathan Drew writes in his project journal. He mentions about his work on arthropods and how the lived before mankind and how they will continue to live after mankind. The work included how they are closer to harnessing the arachnid's innate environmental adaptability and grafting it to the human genome. At the same time, Miriam Drew (Jonathan's wife) is collecting an arachnid speciman, Latrodectus Wundagore out in the hillside of the mountain.

As they walk back to the house, Miriam mentions a couple names for their baby, Michelle or Rebecca. When they arrive back at their house, they are greeted by their housekeeper, Bova. A helicopter arrives as well as they (along with Miles Warren) are surprised by the early arrival of General Wyndham (Wyndham is providing the funding for their research). Wyndham wants to "see the boys in action" in their scientic research. So Jonathan decides to show the General the Genetic Compiler that uses laser technology and allows the scientist to access a subject's DNA and work on them in real time. Miriam continues to say that they have been testing various arachnid species. As she picks up the arachnid species, Warren yells out, "Don't touch it!" Warren was in the middle of running a timer diagnostic. Miriam is exposed to the laser beam of the Genetic Compiler, directly to the unborn child.

Two months later, Mariam's ultrasound test results indicate that the baby is losing weight, has an irregular heartbeat and abnormal vital signs. The parents are terrified and prepare for the worst. But three months later a miracle happens, Jessica Miriam Drew is born healthy.

Years later, we see Miriam and Jessica out for a walk collecting arachnid specimens. Jessica finds a Latrodectus Wundagore specimen and collects it into a container. Jessica asks if the spider has a family and if the spider liked where he was. During the Q&A Jessica takes the Spider out of the container and lets it walk on her fingers. Miriam is petrified and tells Jessica what she is doing is very dangerous. But jessica lets the spider down and sets it free.

Miriam mentions what happened to Jonathan and he is furious. The couple get into a big fight. Jonathan is on edge because Warren has left the project to explore DNA cloning instead of DNA alteration.

Jessica Drew is alone in her room bored to tears. As she looks out the window, she realizes that her hands somehow attached themselves to the window sill. Jessica is startled and she starts to get a nose bleed. But as she attempt to remove her hands, she breaks the window sill then blacks out. She wakes up with her mother in an examining room. Then Jonathan come in takes a blood sample from Jessica for testing.

...Spider-Woman: Origin is all about her beginnings, stepping through her time with Hydra and S.H.I.E.L.D. right up until she starts her super hero career.

The New Avengers story, on the other hand, is about where she is today and just what deals she cut to get her powers back. They're both really fun stories that revolve around two different points in the life of a very interesting character.
...Bendis and I have agreed since the beginning that this is a woman with a lot of pent up anger. A lot of rage just sitting there, right under the surface. So in Spider-Woman: Origin, we're really looking at how she got that way in the first place.

If you've read the first Spider-Woman story from Marvel Spotlight, you know she had a boyfriend during her time with Hydra. We play with that relationship and... oh! I haven't said "stay tuned" yet. So, stay tuned and you'll learn all about that little corner of Jessica's past.

Spider-Woman's life is turned upside down pretty early on and it takes her a long, long time to start setting it right again. It's something that she's still working on in New Avengers.

Jonathon: ...Brian (Bendis) called me up saying that he likes the way I tell stories with color and the cinema-esque shots. He wanted Spider-Woman to be told in that manner with wide landscapes, etc. I could be halfway done with the project, and I’ll still think that Brian is playing a big prank on me.

...Spider-Woman is relatively new to me. The first time I saw Jessica Drew was in Alias. I’ve read all the research that Brian and Tom Brevoort have sent me, so I’d like to think I know her well enough.

...Jessica’s got a misty past, but she’s very strong. I think it’s become pretty apparent that Josh and I like strong-willed female characters. If Spider-Woman becomes anywhere as huge an icon as Spider-Man, I would be so proud.

CHOICES: A late night in San Francisco, Jessica Drew is contimplating about here life as she is trying to deposit a check she has been paid for as a private investigator. She's think about the offer of becoming an Avenger. Suddenly two thugs hold her up and Jessica tries to use her venom blast but it doesn't seem to be working. So she uses her SHEILD/HYDRA training to defend herself and apprehends one of the attackers. As the other tries to escapes, her venom blast finally works and apprehends the other attacker. TBC

The Spider-Woman story leads directly into the Spider-Woman two-parter coming up this fall in New Avengers. It's the first chapter in a wide tapestry on Spider-Woman material that I will be putting out over the year. Now that House is done I am putting a lot of brain juice into the legend of Jessica Drew.

Expect big things for Spider-Woman later this year!

THE HIGH EVOLUTIONARY—ALL MY CHILDREN: The aftermath of a battle the High Evolutionary and his new men against the Chtonon is all around the Citadel. Seventeen of the forty-two new men of the High Evolutionary are dead. Jonathan has returned but not as himself but rather he is possed by Magnus the Sorcerer. Magnus brings in another causualty. This time it is Baron Russoff, their neighbor in Wundagore Mountain. Appearantly Russoff's dealing with the Satanic rituals enabled Chthon to rise. Magnus was able to help defealt Chthon by possesing Russoff and forcing him to read the ritual of banishment from the book of Darkhold. Chthon ends up killing Russoff in the process.

It appears that Magnus has been a guest in Wundagore for almost a decade and though his time has been informative and momorable, he must return to his grave and relinguish the body of Johnathan Drew to the rightful possesor. But later that day the HE wonders if Jessica Drew will ever be well.

Jessica finally awakens and refers to HE as her daddy. But HE tell her that HE is not her father. He introduces BOVA (one of HE's new men/a genetic altered cow) as Jessica's nanny.

THE HIGH EVOLUTIONARY—SILVER AND CRIMSON: 1931, Wyndham is strolling around Wundagore Mountain and is attacked and is almost gutted by the Man-Beast that he thinks attacked Merriem. As he returns to the Citadel, he finds a note from Jonathan indicating that he can no longer take it without Merriem and is going back to America. He also says that the Citadel is all his.

Now that he is the only human left in the Citadel along with the comatose Jessica Drew, he decides to make an armor for himself should he be confronted by the man-beast again. A month later the man-beast returns and attack and kills one of the subterrenean workers. With his new armor, Wyndham ends up capturing the man-beast and the subterrenean workers return to the tunnel they came from. Wyndham doesn't think he'll ever see them again.

THE HIGH EVOLUTIONARY—BLOOD DRAWN, BLOOD SPILT: 1931 Wyndham supervises the building of the Citadel of Science. Jonathan is concerned about the subterraneans (sub-human) workers and if Merriem knew about the strange things going on in the Citadel, she might take Jessica as far away as she can from there.

Outside the Citadel, Merriem is hanging laundry while Jessica is playing with her playmate Phillip (the Masters' Boy). As the children are playing in the mud making clayman, Jessica falls into the mud.

Soon, Merriem runs to Jonathan and tells him that Jessica is deathly ill. Wyndham thinks it's from radiation poisoning and ends up putting Jessica in a cryogenic unit to slow down the cell destruction. Wyndham thinks there is nothing else he can do. However, Jonathan thinks his spider serum he has been working on will counter the radiation poisoning. But after administering the serum, Jessica does not respond. Unfortunately the serum needs an incubation period and Wyndham suggests that his genetic accelerator might work. Meriem hysterically apposes that her daughter becomes a guinea pig.

Later that day, Jonathan and Merriem have an argument about how he never had enough time for her and Jessica. Merriem goes out for a walk. Six hours later Merriem isn't back and Jonathan and Wyndham goes out to look for her. After splitting up to cover more ground, Wyndham finds Merriem dead. Merriem has been mauled. And from distant Wyndam thinks he sees a beastl howling in the moonlight.

Just before sunrise, Jonathan meets up with Wyndham and he blames himself for Merriem's death. Wyndham does not mention about the mauling and the man-beast for he fears that Jonathan might blame the subterraneans workers. Wyndham also vows that he would find Merriem's killer and make him pay for the murder.

The High Evolutionary—The Men, the Mine, the Mountain!: 1930, in the eastern hills of Wundagore Mountain, Wyndham and Jonathan discover uranium in the property Merriem just inherited. And months later they were in full mining operations. In addition Wynham and Jonathan discuss about German Roket Scientist, Horace Grabsheid about building the Citadel of Science that is space worthy.

One evening young Jessica Drew screams as she is startled from something she saw outside in the moonlight. As Wyndham and Johnathan go out to investigate, Johnathan decides to talk to the miners about wondering about in the property while Wyndham checks out the mine.

On his way to the mine, Wyndham encounters the mysterious man he met in Geneva that gave him the papers on genetic codes. The man doesn't indicate who he is but says his purpose is to foster scientific advancement and that he has another gift for Wyndham in the mine. The mysterious man has brought Wyndham workers, subterranean sub-humans that will work in the mine and build the Citadel of Science. As Wyndham asks questions, the mysterious man disappears.

The High Evolutionary: Pet Project
The year is 1930 and we find Herbert Edgar Wyndham working late in an Oxford University physics laboratory. He is examining an old parchment containing maps of DNA that was giving to him by a tall strange man in Geneva. The head of the physics department, Professor Reardon, drops in on him and to Wyndham's surprise hides the old parchment. Reardon lectures Wyndham about his grades and that his scholarship is at risk of being rescinded. Wyndham feels he has little patience for the elementary lessons the faculty at Oxford teaches him but the facilities are the best in England. So Wyndham decides to show Reardon and the other professors what he has been working on so that they may consider permitting him to determine his own curriculum. He shows them his prototype of a genetic accelerator, a device designed to speed up the evolutionary process. The professors are in disbelief so Wyndham shows them his DNA diagrams of rats he has been working on. But in the course of conversation, the professors feel that Wyndham is mocking them. Unfortunately with Wynham's temper, he gets expelled.

Wyndham moves back home and his mother decides to move in with her sister in order for Wyndham to rent out the family home so that he can finance his experiments. He mentions a third parchment of DNA diagram that he has not yet translated but feels confident that his experimental process will no longer be fatal. He uses his genetic accelerator on his dog (Dempsey the Dalmatian) and transforms him into a human-dog like creature. After the experiment, the creature escapes. Wyndham goes after the creature but suddenly he hears a gunshot. He finds the creature dead, shot by hunters who mistaken the creature for a deer.

Months later, we find Wyndham in a flat in Paris with Jonathan and Merriam Drew along with their baby daughter Jessica. Wyndham apparently wrote Jonathan asking if he'd be interested in pooling resources together in order to set up a little research facility. It appears that Jonathan and Wyndham have been old friends from the Geneva Science Conference over the years. The Drews offer a tract of land Merriam just inherited from her maternal uncle and a renovation for a laboratory is suggested by Merriam. Wyndham also offers to sell his mothers house to raise enough capital to buy apparatus they would require. After the champagne is poured they make a toast. Jonathan Drew: "Here's to setting science on its ear. "

STONEHENGE...WITH DEATH!: Alicia Masters recovers with Dr. Kort's treatment. She reminds Grimm (the Thing) that he promised to take her to Stonehenge before the leave London.

Back in the Parliament basement, the mysterious treasure box is still and then a spectral hand reaches out from nowhere.

While at Stonehenge, a whirl of fire suddenly appears and four beings (The four Brothers: Mud, Aero, Hellfire and Hydro) stand before Grimm and Masters. Spider-Woman had followed Grimm and Masters and finds herself suddenly in the middle of a pentagram below Stonehenge. The Brothers indicate they are looking for Merlin's student that had taken the mystic book of Darkhold. Grimm attacks the Mud Brother and a battle begins. SW fires her venom blast with no affect to Mud Brother.

Suddenly Modred the Mystic appears. He is the one the Four Brother are searching for and want to return to Merlin. A mystic battle begins and Modred finds himself caught up in a Tornado. Grimm and SW try to fight back but with no affects. Modred summons the power of the sun to contain the tornado and Brother Aero ceases to exist. Modred tells SW to help Grimm and Masters along with tourist while he destroys the other Elemental Brothers.

As they come out of the depths of Stonehenge, Modred tell SW that she is a woman of surprising power. SW responds saying that she fears what she is and that she is not human. But Modred tells her she is human like the tourist that are there as he casts a spell to make them forget of the events. Modred offers to restore her memories so she can know who she really is.
SW says goodbye to Grimm and Alicia and then Modred tells SW that they will not remember her. Modred then continues to reveal SW's past.

ORIGIN: Modred tells Spider-Woman she is a woman (human and not an evolve spider) with suprising powers and during his time she would be considered a sorceress with unimanigable might.

AND ONLY THE INVISIBLE GIRL CAN SAVE US NOW!: Grimm (the Thing) is trapped in the web of the New Spider-Woman (Alicia Masters). As Masters goes in for the kill, Spider-Woman attacks Masters allowing Grimm to free himself. SW tells Grimm that if they don't shock Masters into submission, her rapid metabolism could kill her. They lure Masters away from the public towards the clock tower but Masters captures SW using her webbing. Meanwhile Grimm calls the Baxter Building for back up.

Not far away beneath the Parliament, Chauncy and Trevor find the hidden box of treasure. But as they open the box, a flash of light engulps them and they disappear.

Special assault squad officers arrive at the scene and prepare to shoot Masters. But Grimm prevents their attack and stand in their way. However Masters starts attacking them all.

Elsewhere, HYDRA is monitoring Masters as they watch Grimm knock out the control unit off Masters' forehead. Masters is now out of control. SW is able to break free from Masters webbing and attempts to lure Masters away from the public. Suddenly the Invisible Girl appears and places a force field around Masters but she manages to break it. IG ends up putting a force field around Masters' head in hopes it will sufficate her unconscious. But as Masters tries to break free, she finally passes out.

Later at the home of Dr. Kort, Masters goes through a reverse treatment process that turned her into the new Spider-Woman.

POWERS: Spider-Woman compares her venom blast with Masters and says Master's venom blast is more destructive.
SW also points out that her acute hearing is similar to Masters.
COSTUME: Wilson has repeated the front design of the costume in the back.

MY SWEETHEART...MY KILLER: Grimm (the Thing) and Spider-Woman are in the Thames River after Big Ben had exploded. As Grimm swims up to the surface with SW, they are immediately attacked be HYDRA but Grimm grabs the 7X HYDRA boat and tosses it and it explodes.

As SW becomes concious, she starts remembering and indicates that the explosion must have cleared her mind and her memories are coming back so quickly. She remembers her initial escape from HYDRA but was soon recaptured and hypnotized to be a HYDRA agent again. She also remembers being assigned to kill Grimm and capture Alicia Masters for a secret experiment.

Across London, Trevor and Chauncey are putting the maps together they got from the stolen silver plates to decypher where a box of treasure was buried by a war criminal, Heinrich Buerer, in 1941.

In HYDRA's headquarters, the HYDRA Supreme indicates that they have the chemical structure that created the Spider-Woman and are going use it on Alicia Masters.

In the HYDRA Waylay base, SW and Grimm are looking for clues on where they might find Masters and see if SW can remember anything else. But when they step outside of the base, they are confonted by the Masters, the Spider-Woman Beast. Masters take down SW and soon goes after Grimm. In the course of battle, Masters ends up capturing Grimm with a spunned web.

Across town in Parliament, Trevor and Chauncey find the hidden treasure box.

ORIGIN: Spider-Woman is recapture by HYDRA and his hypnotized in to believing she is a HYDRA Agent.
COSTUME: Skull cap with the yellow triangle is used.

BATTLE ATOP BIG BEN!: A bomb explodes in the Westminister Abbey, and the police arrive at the scene. The police are all gunned down with sleeping darts by a couple of terrorist (Chauncy and Trevor). At nearby Picadilly Circus, Ben Grimm hears the blast and runs towards the scene. As he apprehends the two terrorists, Spider-Woman attacks Grimm from the air with her venom-blast but she is surprised the Grimm was not stunned for it would have killed raging rhinoceros. Meanwhile, Chauncy and Trevor are doing what they came there to do, dig up paving stones to find the silver plate. In the course of battle, Spider-Woman retreats because Grimm is much stronger than what she was told.

As she flies away, she has trouble remember and doesn't know why she did not use her full power. She remembers a man inside a machine, then a blinding light and stepping out of another machine and nothing more. As she reports a failed mission to the HYDRA supreme, she is instructed to go to her room. It appears that Spider-Woman is under "superior hypnotic technique control.

The HYDRA Supreme indicates that they have the serum which has the genetic code that created Spider-Woman and the plan is for HYDRA to created an army of Spider-Women to conquer the world.

Grimm is with Scotland Yard and is talking with Nick Fury via a video call and getting all the information on Spider-Woman. And off the Haymarket in central London, Chauncy and Trevor are deciphering the sillve plate and planning to find the last clue of the silve plate.

Later that day, Spider-Woman kipnaps and grabs Alicia Masters from Ben Grimm by an aerial swoop down at the Tower of London. Soon after, Chauncy and Trevor attack Grimm as they make their way to steal the last silver plate. As Grimm tries to apprehend them again, he sees Spider-Woman flying overhead and tries to go after her. Grimm and the Spider-Woman end up battling on top of London's Watchtower, Big Ben. Spider-Woman shoots her venom blast and this time Grimm falls and ends up hanging on the ledge of Big Ben. Spider-Woman senses that Grimm has weakend. And as the venom start's penetrating Grimm's blood stream his knees start to buckle and he can barely hang on the ledge. Suddenly, Big Ben explodes and they both fall into the Thames River. Chauncy and Trevor look over a ledge, and think they are both dead. They plan to move ahead with their plans "unfettered."

ORIGIN: The story mentions the High Evolutionary's Genetic Accelerator and HYDRA's control over Spider-Woman using superior hypnosis techniques. HYDRA also now posses the serum (developed by Dr. Kort) which isolates the genetic code that created Spider-Woman.
POWERS: Spider-Woman can glide/fly and swoop down, snatch her prey and continue flying using the finely spun wings of glistening filament.
Spider-Woman's venom blast knocked the Thing down as it made his knees buckle and become disoriented. It also mentions that her venom can kill a charging rhino.
Spider-Woman also can sense the weakend state of the Thing.
COSTUME: The cover does not use the yellow triangle skull cap while inside it does.

TWO AGAINST HYDRA: Ben Grimm (on assigment from Reed Richards) and his girlfriend Alicia Masters are in London England. Grimm needs to find Doctor Louis Kort, a cybernetics and bio-genetics scientist, who might be able to aid the dying DeathLok. When they get to his house, it seems that the place has been pillaged.

Elsewhere, Dr. Kort has been captured by HYDRA and forced to create a serum to recreate an army of warriors with unmatchable powers of the Spider-Woman. It seems that the Spider-Woman has been captured as well.

Elsewhere, Shang Chi, Master of Kung Fu hears Masters' screams and thinks Grimm is an attacker. While they are duking it out, Chi realizes that Grimm is not an attacker. As Grimm tells Chi about Dr. Kort, Chi indicates that his former employer, Nayland Smith, seems to be connected and they form an aliance to find and rescue Dr. Kort.

They ended up rescuing Dr. Kort, Angelica and her boyfriend from HYDRA's secret hideout along the Victoria embankment. However, the Dr. Kort failed to destroy all of the serum as they were escaping. Thus HYDRA finds the last remaining vial of serum and vowed that the world will be theirs.

ORIGIN: After her initial escape from HYDRA (Count Otto Vermis), Spider-Woman is recaptured and experiments were made in order for Dr. Kort to create a spider serum that would create an army with powers similar to Spider-Woman.
COSTUME: The yellow triangle is not used on her skull cap, only black point shape where the yellow triangle would be.

DARK DESTINY: Hydra Alpha Flight Team covered by clouds and anti-radar force screens loom over Mediterranean Branch of SHEILD in the Riveria as Agent Arachne (Spider-Woman) flies into the compound undetected and enters through the air conditioning vent. Meanwhile, Colonel Fury is interrogating a captured Hydra Agent (Jared). Arachne reaches the interrogation room, knocks out the guards and breaks the steal door down. She then removes one of her gloves and venom bolts a few of the SHEILD agents. Fury and Jared remain standing. Arachne threatens Fury that the next venom bolt will occur when she is touching him, bringing death for what Fury has done to the man she loves.

As Arachne stalks toward Fury, she starts to remember how she got to where she is now. It starts out in a small Alpine village as a young girl flees from a group of village men only to react using her strange powers (venom bolts). She is found by Count Otto Vermis, and area commander of Hydra. Vermis lies to the girl to joining him in a cause to aid and to improve an uncomprehending world under Hydra. As a father figure, Vermis promises the girl to help her retain her memory she had lost via Hydra's mind probe that revealed her creation and an incident. Then Vermis uses the information to trick and manipulate the girl to mold her as Hydra's deadliest weapon. Having been told that the mind probe was unsuccessful, the girl begins training under Hydra's top combat unit with her natural powers honed to fighting perfection. Then she is given a costume, specially design to channel and control her power and thus the Spider-Woman is born. Working closely with Jared in the combat unit, she falls in love with him. And so as Jared gets captured by SHEILD, Arachne is manipulated to go after SHEILD, targeting Fury and rescuing Jared.

As Fury dodges one of Archne's venom bolts, he is surprised with her spider agility and leaping prowess. Fury reaches the interrogation chamber's control console only to be grabbed and held down by Jared, who orders Arachne to kill Fury. But as Arachne reaches in to fire her venom bolts, Fury flips Jared over and Jared is struck with Arachne's leathal venom bolts. Distraught by her actions, Fury hits the alarm but Aracnhe grabs Fury and slams his head hard into the levers and dials triggering the video-playback system revealing Hydra's true intention. The scenes of terrorism and brutality with Jared in the center of an airline hijack. Arachne then realizes that she has been lied to, used and manipulated. But she refuses to believe it. She comforts her fallen lover and Jared tells her not to touch him because he know what she really is and that he was ordered to be her lover and how it was planned for her to go after Fury.

Enraged by the revelation, Arachne goes after Vermis. She takes one of Hydra's flyer and flies it to the remote Carnic Alps and crashes it into the abandoned monastery hideout. In all the flames and chaos, Arachne finds and captures Vermis. He bargain with Arachne for his escape and her origin. Vermis tell her about the High Evolutionary and the genetic accelerator how she is the first female descended from a total different species. Arachne is in disbelief as Vermis continues on. He tells her how she was ostracized from the High Evolutionary's other creation drove her to runaway. Vermis goes on by saying that she ended up in a nearby village where she found a new life and even love, but one day as she and her loved one were surprised by neighbors, she accidentally kills her loved one with her venom bolts.

As she remembers what had traumatized her, Vermis sets off a poisonous gas pellet and Arachne falls to the ground. But as the rocket plane takes off, Arachne takes a powerful leap and manages to dig her fingers into the metal alloy tail of the rocket plane. Vermis is surprised that the poisonous gas did not kill Arachne but soon realized that with her power to produce venom, she may be immune to other poisons. Vermis tries to shoot her off the tail of the rocket plane but Arachne bends the tail and turns the rocket plane to fly into a mountain cliff. As Arachne glides on finely spun wings of glistening filaments, she descends to the silent forest.

ORIGIN: Hydra/Vermis' account of Arachne's orgins indicate that she is a creation of the High Evolutionary (who names her Arachne) and the first female derived from a totally different species (spider) as appose to animals; tigers, dogs, cows (Bova) etc. Arachne flees Wundagore and find a life in a nearby Alpine Village and starts a new life and fall in love with someone (unknown) who she accidentally kills which traumatized her to forget. As she is driven out by the town village, Vermis finds her convinces her to join Hydra and she is trained and manipulated, given a specialized uniform/costume and thus the Spider-Woman is born.
POWERS: She is trained in the combat unit where she learns how to control and use her powers: venom bolts, spider agility (clinging to walls, ceilings) and prowess. Her uniform was specially designed to channel and control her spider-like powers and enabled her to glide (on finely spun wings of glistening filaments) in the air. Her other powers mentioned include immunity to other poisons and her stregnth to break down a steal door and her fingers can dig into metal alloy tail of a rocket plane then bend it.
COSTUME: The cover shows the yellow triangle on her skull cap but inside it does not. Inside show a black point to where the yellow triangle would be but the black shape continues to the neck and chest area all the way dow to her back. And in the back, there is also a yellow circular spiked shape. Also the top part of her boots point up.
